Heroin in fast food outlet

A BALLINAKILL man well known to local gardaí who Judge Catherine Staines remarked seemed to be trying to get his life together has been put on probation for drug offences.

Christopher Campion, Chapel Street, Ballinakill, was charged with the unlawful possession of drugs, at Supermacs, James Fintan Lawlor Avenue, Portlaoise, on May 11 last year.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that Campion was searched by gardaí and found to have heroin valued at €200.

Campion has 35 previous convictions, including two for drugs.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick admitted her client, a 28-year-old man, was well known to the gardaí and had a long history of offending. She told the court that Campion’s younger brother had died tragically in 2011 and Campion had difficulty coping, developing a heroin addiction. He has since engaged with Coote Street addiction services in Portlaoise and is on 180ml of methadone a day, which is quite high but still shows a marked improvement.

Ms Fitzpatrick concluded by saying that Campion is planning to start bereavement counselling next month to deal with his brother’s death, and he is submitting himself to urine analysis for his drug addiction.

“He seems to be trying to get his life together,” said Judge Staines.

The judge applied the probation act.
