Hit and run driver is charged

A CASTLETOWN man who failed to stop his car after he crossed the continual white line in the middle of the road and scraped the side of a lorry has been convicted of hit and run.

Garry Ryan, Newtown, Castletown, was also charged with having no driving licence and no insurance, at Nyra, Mountmellick, on February 6 this year.

Inspector Martin Harrington described the incident as “a minor collision”, although €1,200 damage was caused to the lorry.

Defence, Mr Philip Meagher said his client was of the opinion the collision was so minor he believed the driver of the truck may not have noticed.

Remarking that if a witness hadn’t recorded Ryan’s licence plate he wouldn’t have been in court to face the charges, Judge Staines put the matter back to December 5 for a receipt of damages from the lorry driver.
