In custody until compensation paid
A PORTLAOISE man convicted of driving off without paying for petrol who told the district court he could not afford to reimburse the filling station was taken into custody at last week’s district court, until he agreed to hand over the €30 compensation.
Vincent Scott, 1 Green View, Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise, committed the offence at Downeys Auto, Dublin Road, Portlaoise, on January 4. His case was adjourned at a previous court sitting for him to gather up compensation, but last week his solicitor, Mr Declan Breen told Judge Catherine Staines that his client did not have the money.
Mr Breen said that Scott is on social welfare and is struggling to make ends meet. He asked the judge whether she would consider imposing a compensation order instead.
“I’m not going to make a compensation order if he has no intention to pay,” replied Judge Staines. “He’s in custody until he pays.”
Within minutes of being taken into custody, Scott produced €30 to the court.
“I had to borrow it,” he complained.
“Well, Mr Downey deserves to be paid,” declared the judge.
Scott was also fined €100.
