Ivolve teenagers during key years
INVOLVING teenagers in projects during the years when they are becoming independent is crucially important to how they cope with difficulties and achieve their goals, according to one of the organisers of a Laois Connects event.
Joe Thompson of Youth Work Ireland is one of the organisers of an event for young people in Portlaoise on September 15. Former Governor of Mountjoy Prison and Laois footballer Ross Munnelly are among those lined up for to take part in an event organised by young people.
He said that during adolescence teenagers are going through the life forming few years. During this time he said it was important that they open up. He said teenagers want to be indpendent but also want to be in groups which is why Youth Work Ireland run programmes.
“Young people begin to open up and engage with each other through these programmes particularly if they are not into sport. They come out of themselves and that alone improves their social skills and builds their self esteem,” he said.
Mr Thompson said teenagers need to be doing things with adults other than their parents. He said teenagers must be asked what they want to do and what help can be given to achieve goals and take responsiblity.
He said a Youth Work Ireland is also running a running a Drug Awareness Week from Monday 1 - Friday 5 October. As part of the Drug Awareness Week. One of those being the “ how to talk to your kids” which is planned to take place in Parish Centre Portlaoise on Wednesday, October 3.
