Jailed for second drink driving offence
A LITHUANIAN national has been sentenced to four months in prison for driving drunk while disqualified.
Zigmantas Pocius, 11 Rathevan Close, Portlaoise, was charged with drink driving, driving without insurance and driving while disqualified. The offences were committed at the Borris Road, Portlaoise, on December 2 last year.
Inspector Dermot Drea gave evidence that Pocius was observed driving on the wrong side of the road and when he was stopped, a breath sample returned a reading of 92mg of alcohol on his breath.
He has one previous conviction for drink driving.
Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client had made a very foolish decision to drive, one which had put other people at risk. She said Pocius, a 42-year-old Lithuanian national, accepted that he had driven while disqualified, although it had only been a short journey.
Judge Catherine Staines remarked that Pocius had driven drunk, he had driven while disqualified and this was his second conviction. She sentenced him to four months in prison and disqualified him from driving for six years.
Recognizance was fixed in the event of an appeal.
