Just 700 septic tanks registered
WITH less than ten days to go before the septic tank charge increases ten-fold, a dismal 718 registrations have been confirmed in county Laois.
This means that almost 9,700 homes in the county could still be unregistered and face a €50 charge unless they opt to pay €5 by Friday week, September 28.
The LGMA (Local Government Management Agency) is administering the scheme and it confirmed to the ‘Leinster Express’ that just 718 payments from Laois had been registered.
A spokesperson for the LGMA 10,000 registration forms in the bureau waiting to be processed.
“We don’t know what counties they are from. Also there would be a number of registrations in local authorities that have not yet been processed.”
According to the CSO (Central Statistics Office) the number of houses in Laois is 27,916 and 10,401 of those indicated they had septic tanks when they were filling in their census forms last year.
Under the Water Services (Amendment) Act 2012 owners of septic tanks and other domestic waste water treatment systems are required to register their systems with their water services authority – currently Laois County Council. The €5 registration fee is once-off payment that will increase to €50 for those who register after September 28. Owners have to renew their registration every five years, at no cost.
The owners of commercial premises, community facilities, sporting clubs and institutional facilities not connected to a public sewerage system must register.
