editorial image

The funeral will take place in Edenderry today of journalist, Kevin Farrell.

Removal will take place form his home in Monasteroris today, Wednesday, to St Mary’s Church Edenderry for Funeral Mass at 12pm. Burial afterwards in St Mary’s cemetery.

Kevin Farrell was one of the country’s most accomplished journalists. The Edenderry native was a legend in the business with contacts up and down the country, built up over 35 years in the trade.

Although he came to journalism at a later stage than most, having dabbled in the entertainment business from an early age, Kevin became, in time, one of the most recognised names among the press corps.

At the age of 15 he was promoting dances in halls, ballrooms and marquees around the midlands, by the age of 20 he had gone into band management. He gave numerous future stars their first big break, including three time Eurovision winner Johnny Logan.

Kevin branched into journalism through the Offaly Topic and then the Leinster Express and Offaly Express, and joined the Irish Star in the late 90s having previously worked for the Sunday World.

Over three years ago he was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour on his liver and underwent a liver transplant which enhanced his life for a while. Sadly the cancer returned and he had been in ill health for the past few months.

He is survived by his wife Eileen, daughter Sinead and sons David and Kevin junior, as well as brothers, sisters and extended family.

May he rest in peace.
