Laois men more likely to remarry
LAOIS men are more likely to re-marry than their female counterparts.
New figures show that nearly four out of ten divorced men in the county re-married compared with almost 30% of women. Census 2011 showed that a total of 746 people in the county were re-married after divorce.
The figures also show that just over 2.3% (1,425 people) had split. This compared to 2.4% for the State. Almost 3,000 people were widowed.
There were 21,037 families in Laois on Census Night and 30,382 or 50.1% of people (aged 15 and over) in the county were married.
At 23.754, Laois has a higher than average number of single people. There were 6,096 people living alone, representing 7.6% of all people. Of these 2,044 were aged 65 and over, the majority women who accounted for 62.4% of those living alone in the county in this age group. Deirdre Cullen, CSO Senior Statistician, said the report ‘Households and Families – Living Arrangements in Ireland’ provides an in-depth picture of households and living arrangements in Laois at the time of the last census.
