Major sewage extension project
AN extension of the sewage line to the Johnstown Glebe, Errill Road ‘has to be done right’ insisted Borris-in-Ossory electoral area Cathaoirleach Marty Phelan when members met last Wednesday in Clough Community Centre.
Jack Creegan SEE Sanitary Services, in a written response to Cllr John King’s motion, outlined that Laois County Council is currently investigating the possibility of connecting the properties in this area.
Mr Creegan added, “If technically feasible, the cost of the works required will be calculated. A submission can then be sent to the Department for approval. Subject to Department approval of funding this cost, the works could be included in the scheme. A further progress report should be available for the next meeting.”
Cllr King enquired what would the cost be and when is the cut off point?
And he was informed by Senior Executive Engineer Michael Malone the cost would depend on the density of houses.
Cllr Brendan Phelan said some septic tanks had been built on rocks and there was no percolation. He said it was a big plus that under the new design an ugly pipe going through Brewery Pond was going to be removed.
“It is no harm to see it removed as it trapped dirt,” added Cllr Phelan.
Cllr John Joe Fennelly said the sewage extension was a major project for the four towns of Abbeyleix, Durrow, Mountrath and Rathdowney and that councillors needed to ascertain what areas will be connected. “We’ll never get the chance to do so again.”
Mr Malone said the contractor was due to begin next January so all the detail would have to be finalised by then.
Cllr Marty Phelan said he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of people on the outskirts of the area contributing to the sewage scheme. He emphasised the need for the project ‘to be done right’ and he requested that the County Manager and some representatives of groups in the local areas should be invited to an electoral area meeting to discuss the issue.
