Man just holding knife for friend

A PORTARLINGTON man who claimed the reason he had a large kitchen knife in the street was because he was holding it for a friend was last week charged with the possession of knives at Portlaoise District Court.

Kamil Cruk, with an address listed at 67 Lough Gate, Port, committed the offence at Main Street, Port, on November 18, 2012.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that the defendant was observed with the knife at 2.10am and he attempted to first hide and then discard the weapon when approached by gardaí. Insp Harrington told the court that Cruk claimed the knife was not his and he was just holding it for a friend.

“He had no reason to have it,” said the inspector.

Cruk was also charged with the unauthorised carriage in a motor vehicle, at Corrig, Port, on December 6 last year. Insp Harrington explained that Cruk was one of the occupants of a stolen car.

Cruk also failed to appear for his court date on December 20.

Defence, Ms Elaine Dunne, acting on behalf of solicitor, Mr Declan Breen, told Judge William Early that 20-year-old Cruk suffers with a “significant alcohol problem” and he apologised for not turning up on December 20.

Ms Dunne requested a statements order and the matter was put back to February 7.
