Member of the public stopped man robbing from cars
A PORTLAOISE man was restrained by a member of the public until the gardaí arrived, after he was seen breaking into parked cars in a local housing estate.
Arising from the incident, Sean Kemp, of 11 Fielbrook, Portlaoise, appeared before last week’s district court where he faced a number of charges.
Garda Roy Cooper gave evidence that he received a call to a Portlaoise housing estate on December 28 last year, from a man who had observed Kemp breaking into his neighbour’s car. The man restrained Kemp until the garda arrived and when Garda Cooper searched Kemp, he discovered a camera which had been stolen from another car in Portlaoise. Kemp subsequently pointed out other cars he had got into, all of which were unlocked, and he was discovered to have stolen €20 from one of the vehicles.
There was a separate charge of theft against Kemp, relating to July 20 last year. Garda Conor Murphy gave evidence that Kemp broke the rear window of a house and gained entry, before he stole goods including a sat nav, a DVD player and a laptop. The total value of items stolen was €3,000.
Inspector Martin Harrington told Judge William Early that there will be further charges brought against Kemp in the coming weeks.
Kemp was remanded on continual bail to February 7, with conditions that he must reside at Fielbrook, he must sign on daily at the garda station, and he must observe a curfew of 8pm to 8am.
