Portlaoise Town Councillor, Rotimi Adebari has called on the council to install a map of Downtown Portlaoise in the vicinity of Portlaoise Retail Park, the Kyle Centre and Laois Shopping Centre. He said the map should contain existing businesses and services in Downtown Portlaoise.

In a written reply to the motion, Tourism Officer, Dom Reddin said the Tourism Section of the Council is working closely with the Portlaoise Downtown committee on a number of initiatives for the town.

“Appropriate signage and advertising/promoting is one of these initiatives. We will discuss the provision of maps as part of the ongoing promotion and agree locations with the committee as to where best such maps could be placed. We will keep the elected members of Portlaoise Town Council updated on progress regarding this matter,” he said.

Cllr Adebari said the signs would let businesses on Main Street know that they had not been forgotten.

“The map would indicate businesses and services on the other side of town, so people would know that the town doesn’t start and end over here.”

Cllr Caroline Dwane said it was important to include the side streets.

“It’s vital that they are not forgotten,” she said.

While, Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald highlighted the impact the primary schools moving away from the town centre will have for local businesses.

“The primary schools moving will have a huge impact on Main Street, businesses felt it when the secondary schools moved out. There will be less footfall in the area.”

Cllr Willie Aird said the half hour free parking had a huge effect and should be extended to an hour.
