Mountmellick road is ‘too far out of town’
Dunnes Stores on the Mountmellick road in Portlaoise has been refused permission to expand their shop to 2.500 sq metres.
The company had made a submission to Laois County Council to change their Local Area Plan for Portlaoise to allow for possible future development of the long established supermarket, which is surrounded by residential developments.
The supermarket chain wanted the facility to expansion, and had also requested that the area be re-designated as a ‘District Centre’ rather than a ‘Neighbourhood Centre’.
The council however were not in favour of either change to their plan, which will govern development in Portlaoise over the next six years.
The reason given was that the site is outside the Town Centre Primary, Secondary, and edge of town areas.
Donal Keily, Senior Planner for the council said the area is simply too far out of town.
“There are other sites closer to the town centre,” he said.
Last Monday, October 22, councillors agreed with the manager’s recommendation, and rejected Dunnes Stores submission, adopting the final draft plan for the town.
