Mountrath woman drove uninsured twice

A MOUNTRATH woman who was stopped driving on two separate occasions with no license or insurance was last week fined and disqualified from driving.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that Justine Hibberd, of 21 Fr O’Connor Crescent, Mountrath, committed the offence at the N7 Dysart, Mountrath, on November 25 last year, and again at Fr O’Connor Crescent on May 2 this year. She also had no NCT on November 25.

In relation to the offence on November 25, defence Mr Philip Meagher said it was unusual circumstances.

Mr Meagher explained that a garda had called to Hibberd’s house to inform her that she had failed to pay €10 for fuel at a local petrol station. When the garda asked her to attend the petrol station, Hibberd became flustered and instead of informing the garda that she was not insured, she foolishly got into her car and drove. It was only at the filling station that the garda inquired about her insurance and she admitted she was not covered.

In relation to the offence on May 2 of this year, Mr Meagher said Hibberd had temporary coverage and had been arranging insurance through a different company, but the payment did not go through.

For the November 25 offences, Judge Catherine Staines imposed fines of €300 for no insurance and €150 for no NCT. For the May 2 offences, the judge imposed a fine of €300 for no insurance and disqualified Hibberd from driving for two years.
