Ned Campion - Hall of Fame Award
AFTER a lifetime at the heartbeat of Irish Showjumping, Col Ned Campion is inducted into the Leinster Express Hall of Fame in recognition of a career which took him to five Olympic Games as a competitor, team manager and Chef d'Equipe.
Having joined the army as a cadet in 1955, he spent his career with the Army Equitation School, going on to represent Ireland at the Olympic Games in Mexico in 1968.
Over the years he competed in countless Nations Cups as well as at World and European Championships before ending his competitive career in 1977. His role within the army equitation school grew and grew, before being named Commanding Officer of the Army Equitation school in 1987.
He held that position for ten years until he retired from the army in 1997, but his role with Irish Showjumping remained as strong as ever. He was Chef d'Equipe for the Irish Showjumping teams at the Olympic Games in Barcelona (1992), Atlanta (1996) and Athens (2004), as well as being named team manager for the Sydney games in 2000.
Despite his retirement, he continues to have a strong interest in all things equine, and has forged a reputation for himself as one of the true Irish legends of showjumping.
