New filling station for Mountrath Road in Portlaoise

A NEW convenience store and filling station could soon be constructed on the site of a former car showroom on the Mountrath Road in Portlaoise, with a provision for a small church to be housed within the completed building.

Just before Christmas, Mr Kevin Hyne made an application to Laois County Council to change the use of part of the existing commercial unit on the Mountrath Road to a convenience shop and car sales office.

An application was also made for the provision of a filling station which will include an associated canopy, fuel pumps, storage tanks, a services bay and ancillary works. It also proposed to extend the existing building for storage purposes, and to retain permission for an existing advertising tower and all associated and ancillary site works, including a new pump station.

Opening hours for the new business will be 7am to 11pm and it is envisaged that up to eight staff members will be needed.

According to a report submitted to the county council on behalf of Mr Hyne by Des Kilmartin Design Services, the site was once a car showroom and currently contains a furniture warehouse, a church, motor factors and tyre sales.

The report says that the general uses that currently exist on the site will remain, however the furniture store is to be turned into the convenience store and an extension will be built onto the existing structure in which will be housed the church.

The design services point out that there is currently very little traffic at the site and they claim that the development will not generate a significant increase of traffic. However, the report accepts that “the renovation of the development could increase its attractiveness, thereby increasing traffic generation”.

It is also noted that the presence of fuel sales could increase the number of short duration trips to the area.

A decision on the application is due from Laois County Council by the beginning of February.
