No seat belts on children

A MOUNTMELLICK woman has been fined and disqualified from driving, having been convicted of driving without insurance, NCT or a tax disc.

Amy Dunne, 27 Cullenwood, Mountmellick, also faced two counts of allowing a person under 17 to occupy a forward facing seat without a seat belt, at Acragar, Mountmellick, on January 19.

Defence, Mr Philip Meagher said his client maintained she was not stopped at Acragar, but was in fact stopped at the townland of Derrydavey. The arresting officer, Garda Arthur Sloan replied that they were adjoining towns and Judge Catherine Staines ruled that there was no relevant issue with the location given.

The judge inquired as to the ages of the children in the car, to which Garda Sloan replied they were five and three.

“And they had no belts on,” remarked the judge.

Addressing the judge directly, Dunne said that the young boy had taken his belt off when the car stopped, but she admitted that the young girl had not been wearing hers.

For non display of tax disc, Dunne was fined €200, for no NCT she was fined €150, and for no insurance she was disqualified from driving for two years. Dunne also received two one-year disqualifications on the no seat belt charges.
