NRA ‘wasting funds’ on Abbeyleix pedestrian crossing

“I CAN’T believe it. It is the biggest waste of funding ever,” was the reaction of Cllr John Joe Fennelly to the news that the NRA (National Roads Authority) has specified that a new pedestrian crossing for Abbeyleix should be located close to the pharmacy at the southern end of the town.

“A pedestrian crossing at the end of the town is of no benefit to anyone from the area. I would like to see it located near Cleland’s or Quinn’s Tea Room,” emphasised Cllr Fennelly.

Senior Executive Engineer Michael Malone pointed out that he will be making it clear to the NRA that the desired location for the signal controlled crossing is further up the town and not the proposed location at the whitewash wall north of the pharmacy.

“I just find it just incredible,” concluded Cllr Fennelly.
