Patch up job on Port’s Main street

Portarlington will have to wait until next year before the main street is resurfraced.

In the meantime road repairs will be done on both ends of the street this year in anticipation o the 2014 work.

A 100 metre section of road on Upper Main Street “requires planning and reinstatement”, says Senior engineer for the Eastern area, Orla Barrett.

“This section of road is on the proposed 2014 roads programme. Minor surface repair will be carried out in the meantime,” she reported at the recent Emo area council meeting.

The roadworks may get the green light this year if savings can be made on other road sections she added.

Cllr Ray Cribbin had requested the work, and said “the road is all broken up”. He also requested repairs to roads near the pedestrian crossing.

A similar reply was given, minor repairs will be done to the road surface on Market Square, Ffrench Church Street and Spa Street junction, at the same time that overlay works are being done on Park Lane.

Next year will see major roadworks from Ffrench Church Street through the junction, coinciding with work on Patrick Street and new cycle paths for the town, if money is approved.

“I am delighted this is to be done, even for emergency work to be carried out. There are holes in the road at the pedestrian crossing,” he said.
