Policing back to square one

After an initial improvement following the public meeting on the issue, policing in Mountmellick was now “back to square one,” claimed Cllr Stephen O’Mara at Mountmellick Town Council October monthly meeting.

Earlier, Cllr Michael Gormley asked had any progress being made towards arranging a meeting between between the new Superintendent and the Council.

Cllr Bobby Delaney: “It’s vital that we meet the Superintendent before Hallowe’en. After the policing committee meeting in the town we really saw how angry people are with the police service we are getting.”

He added: “Since that meeting, there has been a vast improvement in the visibility of Gardai in the area. Our local Deputy tells me that a new squad car hopefully will be here shortly.”

Cllr Paddy Bracken: “A 2012 or 2013?”

Cllr Denis O’Mara: “The one here now would not pass the NCT.”

Chairman Cllr Pat Bowe: “The Gardai are very active and seem to be more active at the station as well. The visibility of Gardai is most important.”

Cllr Stephen Lynch: “I had to go up three times to the station before I would get a Gardai. At the end of the day, a set time for opening the station would be proper.”

Cllr Delaney climed the policing committee chairman had promised College Avenue residents to arrange a meeting within a fortnight.

Chairman Bowe: “The Gardai gave a commitment that they would be active down there.”

Cllr Bracken: “I was of the impression that there was going to be a meeting with residents.”

Chairman Bowe: “Wait until we get a response from the Superintendent.”
