Pool match led to after hour drinks

A POOL tournament that ran over time led to a Stradbally publican selling alcohol after hours, the district court was told.

Brendan Lynch, 56 Garden Village, Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise, committed the offence on May 23 this year, at Napper Tandys pub, Main Street, Stradbally.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that the gardaí inspected the premises at 1.50am and found six or seven people with drinks on the bar.

Defence explained that the incident occurred on a Tuesday night/Wednesday morning and a pool tournament was taking place. 15 matches were scheduled, but the captain of the opposing team turned up an hour and a half late.

“In the interest of sportsmanship, my client let them play,” said defence, adding that “things went down to the wire” on one of the games and proceedings ran on later than expected.

Lynch was fined €300.
