Portarlington man punched garda in face

A PORTARLINGTON man has been put on probation for punching a garda in the face, during an assault which required the use of incapacitant spray to restrain him as he struggled with the officer on the ground.

Darragh Lennon, Derrylea, Portarlington, committed the offence at Main Street, Portlaoise, on December 24, 2011.

Inspector Martin Harrington told the court that a garda patrol observed Lennon walking in the middle of the road at 3.20am. When the gardaí asked him to move, he told them to “f**k off”.

Lennon then punched one of the officers in the face and a struggle on the ground ensued, before incapacitant spray was deployed and Lennon arrested.

Defence, Mr Declan Breen explained that his client had gone out for Christmas drinks early in the day and had kept drinking. He was extremely intoxicated and had difficulty recalling the incident. Mr Breen concluded by saying that Lennon had €1,000 to offer the court.

Judge Catherine Staines put the matter back to March 14 for a probation report.
