Portlaoise College plans ahead

PORTLAOISE College opened its doors to the public in 2006. Now three years on the school has a complete new management team and is looking forward to a bright future.

Colette Dunning is the new principal and was appointed last November.Earlier this year Noel Daly was appointed deputy principal.

Noel, who taught for many years at Heywood Community School in Ballinakill, is enjoying his new management role at Portlaoise College and is looking forward to the future development of the college.

Since their appointment both Colette and Noel have been working closely with staff, parents and students and have set about building for the future with many key developments including a new code of discipline, new subjects including music and chemistry, new pastoral care teams including year heads and tutors and a new admissions policy.

Developments do not stop.

“From this November a major shift in policy is taking place with students in Portlaoise College. After mid term, students will be kept on campus all day and will not be allowed outside the school premises at lunch time,” she said.

This she believes will give parents peace of mind in the knowledge that their son/daughter will be fully supervised on campus along with the opportunity to avail of a healthier lunch on offer in the college. It also encourages students to participate in extra curricular activities and avail of the facilities on offer.

Portlaoise College is the only co-educational secondary school in Portlaoise which caters for all students of all academic abilities and as a result boasts a comprehensive list of subjects. This year 1st years were given the opportunity to sample all subjects on the curriculum over a number of weeks which helped both parents and students decide on their option subjects in preparation for their Junior and Leaving Cert.

Both Colette and Noel invite all prospective secondary school students and their parents to Portlaoise College’s Open Night which takes place on Thursday December 3 from 7pm to 9pm. Colette and Noel and all the staff look forward to meeting with prospective parents and students on their open night and are enthusiastic about the bright future that lies ahead for the college and its students.
