Portlaoise man has anger issues

A PORTLAOISE man facing a number of charges for drugs and public order offences was remanded for a probation report, with Judge Haughton warning him that he could face a prison sentence.

Thomas Lawless, with addresses given at Shalom House, Ridge Rd, Portlaoise, and 9 The Maples, Forest Pk, Portlaoise, was charged with the possession of drugs for sale or supply on February 21 of this year. Inspector John Nolan gave evidence that Garda Padraic Ryan conducted a search of the defendant’s house at 9 The Maples, Forest Park, and found two bags of cannabis, estimated at n500. Lawless later admitted that he intended supplying the drugs to another person.

On that same date, Garda Francis Cooper stopped Lawless at Ridge Rd, Portlaoise. Lawless became abusive to the garda, with members of the public in the vicinity.

On March 18 of this year, Lawless was involved in an altercation with another man at Lockeys, Market Sq, Portlaoise. Lawless knocked the injured party off his stool and kicked him on the floor, although no injuries were sustained.

On March 24 of this year, Garda Sharon Murray passed a group of youths on Main St, Portlaoise. The youths began shouting at Garda Murray and when questioned, Lawless refused to give his name and became abusive. He pulled away from Garda Murray and called her “a tramp”.

Defending, Mr Philip Meagher said his client had been experiencing anger management issues over the years and was currently attending the Cedar Clinic for treatment. With regards to the incident with the cannabis, the drugs had been purchased for a friend’s birthday and were intended for other people in the house on that night. Concerning the incident on March 18, Mr Meagher said his client had “far too much to drink” and had “taken exception” to his girlfriend talking to the injured party.

Judge Haughton put the matter back to July 8, pending a probation report. He ordered Lawless to give a urine sample within 48 hours to “see if he’s clean as he says he is”, adding that “these are serious matters and I’m contemplating a sentence”.
