Portlaoise man must prove he’s a good parent

A PORTLAOISE man who had a drunken row in the street with the mother of his child has been ordered to attend alcohol awareness and complete a good parenting programme.

Jason Sheridan, with an address listed at 54 Mell Street, Kilminchy, Portlaoise, was charged with being intoxicated and using threatening behaviour in public, at the Abbeyleix Road, Portlaoise, on May 27.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that the incident happened at 3.50am and the defendant was observed in an intoxicated state. The inspector said that Sheridan was also abusive to gardaí.

Sheridan has no previous convictions.

Defence, Mr Philip Meagher said that 23-year-old Sheridan had a dispute with the mother of his child, but “peace has broken out since” and there have been no further difficulties.

Judge Catherine Staines asked the age of the child, to which Sheridan replied one and a half years old.

“And both of you were drinking?” asked the judge. “Maybe the HSE should get involved?”

Sheridan replied that the child was being looked after on the night by a grandparent.

Judge Staines ordered him to attend an alcohol awareness programme and to provide a certificate saying he’s completed a good parenting course.

The judge put the matter back to February 7, 2013, saying that if Sheridan comes back with an excellent report she may not impose a conviction.
