Portlaoise man’s ‘robust relationship’ with gardaí

A PORTLAOISE man has been ordered to write a letter of apology to a female garda, who he referred to as “a little f**king bitch” during a drugs search of a house.

Jason Crean, 54 Lakeside Gardens, Kilminchy, Portlaoise, was charged with threatening or abusive behaviour, at Lakeside Gardens on February 7.

Inspector Martin Smethers told the court that Crean was present while a drugs search of a house was being conducted on the day. Crean was highly abusive and aggressive, shouting at the gardaí. The inspector told Judge Catherine Staines that Crean called the gardaí “wankers” and told a female garda she was “a little f*cking bitch”.

Crean, who has 40 previous convictions, was in breach of a suspended sentence at the time.

Defence, Mr Philip Meagher said his client had initially been co-operative and didn’t interfere with the gardaí, however the matter got heated when Crean’s partner arrived on the scene with their children. Mr Meagher said that Crean’s partner had feared a gun might be pulled by one of the gardaí and “at that point matters got agitated”.

Mr Meagher concluded by saying that his client has enjoyed “a robust relationship” with the gardaí over the years.

Judge Staines ordered Crean to donate €300 to the Garda Benevolent Fund and write a letter of apology to the female garda he abused. She warned him to be on his best behaviour from now on.
