Portlaoise petrol thief’s car identified by dice
A Portlaoise man who filled his car with petrol and drove off without paying appeared to have covered the licences plates on his car Portlaoise District Court heard last week.
Vincent Scott, with an address of 1 Green View, Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise, pleaded guilty to the charge of ‘making off without payment’, on January 4 at Downey’s Autostop on the Dublin Road.
Inspector Martin Harrington told the court that Portlaoise Garda Roy Francis Cooper responded to a call from Downey’s.
“He examined CCTV and identified the vehicle. The number places appeared to be covered up. Later in the day he noted the same vehicle, as it had dice and a white sticker. He stopped the vehicle, and he (Mr Scott) admitted it,” Inspt Harrington said.
Solicitor Declan Breen told the court that his client, originally from Clondalkin, had an addiction to cocaine, and had an appointment with an addiction centre in Ballyfermot on the day in question.
“He needed to get to Dublin and didn’t have petrol. He is married with two children and is on social welfare,” Mr Breen said.
Judge Catherine Staines asked if he had brought the €30 to the court, but Mr Scott had not. She asked Inspector Harrington if there were previous convictions, and he replied yes, a similar offence of larceny in 2002.
Judge Staines remanded Mr Scott on continuing bail to appear in the same court on February 15.
“You should have €50 compensation,” she told Mr Scott.
