Portlaoise pubs sold after hours drinks

A NUMBER of Portlaoise publicans were last week fined at the district court, for selling alcohol after hours.

Lethean Limited, 65 Main Street, Portlaoise, was found to have people on the premises at 1.45am on May 19 this year.

Garda Inspector Martin Harrington explained that closing time was meant to be 12.30 to 1am.

Defence, Mr Declan Breen said there had been an office party on the night and the crowd were very slow in leaving. He said that the licence holder had been on the premises earlier in the night, but then had to leave.

There were no previous convictions.

The defendant was fined €300.

Portlaoise Wine Vault Limited was found to have people on the premises of Delaney’s Pub, Main Street, at 1.50am on May 19.

Inspector Harrington said that the doors of the pub were open and when the gardaí spoke to the licensee, he told the guards that he was trying to get the people out.

Defence said that there had been a going away party on the night for three men who were heading to Australia. When the gardaí arrived, staff were in the process of cleaning up.

The defendant was fined €300.

Elizabeth Plunkett, of Peigs Pub, Main Street, was charged with having around 20 people on the premises at 1.40am on May 19.

Defence, Mr Declan Breen said that both his client and her husband, who were the licensees, had not been present in the pub on that night.

Mr Breen explained that it had been Friday night/Saturday morning, and following a big night of music the staff had struggled to get everyone out.

Ms Plunkett’s husband appeared in court and was fined €300.
