Portlaoise’s Taj Mahal

PORTLAOISE’S own ‘Taj Mahal’ could be renovated and rented out as a home, according to the town council.

At the recent council meeting, Cllr Kathleen O’Brien proposed seeking information from Laois County Council about the vacant Round House Marian Avenue.

“It’s a historical house, a lovely house,” she said.

Cllr Matthew Keegan said the house was a unique building in Portlaoise, one which years ago was known by locals as “the Taj Mahal”.

Cllr Willie Aird remarked that the Round House was habitable until recently..

Michael Rainey, senior executive officer with the housing department, informed the council that the property has recently been vacated and staff are currently carrying out a technical survey of the building. Until this is completed there will be no plan put in place.
