Probation service not mind readers

“THE probation service are not mind readers,” said Judge Catherine Staines at last week’s court, rebuking a Portarlington man who failed to inform the service of his change of address.

Leo Broughan, 7 Barrow Way, Port, was charged with having possession of several items at his residence on December 9 last year.

Broughan then failed to appear for his court date on July 19 and a bench warrant was executed for his arrest.

Defence, Mr Declan Breen explained that his client had been evicted from his previous address and thus had failed to receive post which both Mr Breen’s office and the probation service had sent him.

Instructing Broughan that he must inform the probation service if he changes address, Judge Staines inposed 150 hours’ community service in lieu of five months in prison.
