Publicans fined for after hour drinks

TWO Laois publicans have been fined for selling alcohol after hours.

Brendan Lynch, 56 Garden Village, Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise, was charged with the offence at Napper Tandy’s, Stradbally, on February 20 last year.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that gardaí saw the door of the pub open at 12.25am and there were four patrons on the premises consuming alcohol.

Lynch has one previous conviction for the same offence.

Defence, Mr Philip Meagher explained that one of the four people on the premises had actually been a staff member who was cleaning up, while three patrons sat and waited for a taxi. Mr Meagher claimed that the staff member had set a number of drinks on the bar during the clean up and no fresh drinks were served to the patrons.

Lynch was fined €200.

Also before last week’s court was Bergins Syndicate Ltd, charged with selling alcohol after hours at Bergins Pub, Main Street, Portlaoise, on March 11 last year.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that the gardaí found four people consuming alcohol on the premises at 2am.

The defendant has one previous conviction for the same offence.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick admitted that her client would have to take better steps in the future.

Bergins were fined €400.
