Ridge Road not fit for public use

PORTLAOISE’S Green Mill Lane/Ridge Road is “the most dangerous road in Laois”, according to the town council, and was never fit for public access.

At the recent meeting of Portlaoise Town Council, Cllr Jerry Lodge called on the road safety officer to examine the possibility of making the Green Mill Lane/Ridge Road more safe for pedestrians and motorists by installing some form of traffic lighting.

“Every councillor has been approached about the dangers, but if we approach Laois County Council it falls on deaf ears,” he said. “More and more children walking, cycling and driving are coming through that junction. Some accident will happen.”

Cllr Tom Jacob described it “the most dangerous road in Laois” and said he himself had witnessed a near-fatal accident there.

“The road there was never fit for access, it’s highly dangerous,” he said.

Cllr Kathleen O’Brien remarked that the issue had come up time and again at council meetings and still nothing has been done.

“There’s a lot of traffic coming off there. At times it feels like O’Connell Street,” she said.

In a response from the roads department, it was acknowledged that this junction has posed problems for some time. The department intend to review this location again, with a view to making an application to the Department of Transport, under the Road Safety Schemes for funding for improved traffic management.
