Robbed homes on suspended sentence

A PORTLAOISE man who committed a string of robberies from homes in Laois in breach of a suspended sentence has been sent forward to the next sitting of the Circuit Court.

Last week’s district court heard that David Bracken, of Ballyfin Road, Portlaoise, robbed three houses between May and June of last year, as well as a Chinese restaurant. Garda Inspector Martin Harrington outlined the facts.

On May 31, 2011, Bracken broke into a house on the Ballyfin Road via a rear window. He stole €500 in cash, along with a guitar, a television and various tools and electrical goods. The total loss to the injured party was €3,000.

The guitar and the television were subsequently recovered, leaving the cash, tools and electrial items outstanding.

On June 8, Bracken committed three robberies. He gained access to 15 Beechlawn, Portlaoise, via the bathroom window and stole €70 in cash.

He also robbed 16 Beechlawn by gaining access through the kitchen window and stealing a laptop, a camera, a television and jewellery and €300 in cash. The total loss was €4,000.

Finally on the same date, Bracken smashed the glass door of The New Oriental City, Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise, and stole €200.

Inspector Harrington told the court that the homes were unoccupied at the time and Bracken has ten previous convictions.

As Bracken was in breach of a suspended sentence, Judge Catherine Staines sent his case forward to the Circuit Court on October 16 and deferred sentencing to await the court’s decision on the suspended sentence.

The judge remarked that the major issue was compensation and all injured parties have to be repaid.

Bracken was remanded on continual bail on his own bond of €100.
