Robbed teen at train station

A PORTLAOISE man who was in the care of the State since he was five years old was last week convicted of theft.

John McDonagh, with an address at 7 Old Mill, Portlaoise, committed the offence at Portlaoise Train Station on June 15 last year. Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that McDonagh approached a 16-year-old male on the platform and asked him for money. The victim felt intimidated and finally handed over €20.

McDonagh has 12 previous convictions.

Defence for McDonagh said his client has been in care since he was five, but he’s now “getting on well” and hasn’t come to any adverse garda attention.

The matter was put back to November 15 for a probation report, and for McDonagh to pay €50 compensation and write a letter of apology to the injured party.
