Row shuts Mountrath pubs
MOUNTRATH was brought to a standstill last Friday night week, when a violent dispute among members of the Travelling community forced several of the local pubs to close early for fear of property damage or personal injury.
Garda Superintendent Philp Lyons told the Leinster Express that the incident occurred after a group of Travellers, who have a connection with the area, stopped off in Mountrath on their way back from a funeral in Dundalk.
A number of fights broke out in Market Square, forcing several of the local publicans to close their doors earlier than expected in order to escape the disturbance. Two units of the gardaí were called to the scene and a number of arrests were made. Superintendent Lyons has confirmed that no weapons were involved and no damage was caused to any local business.
“The pubs closed out of fear of what might happen,” Supt Lyons said, adding that the situation calmed down quickly after gardaí arrived.
There were no reports of any serious injuries although a number of people are expected to be charged.
