‘Rush of blood’ led to motorbike crash
“A RUSH of blood” was the reason a Mountmellick man driving without insurance attempted to flee from the gardaí on his motorcycle, last week’s district court in Portlaoise was told.
Shane Christie, 37 Esker Gate, Mountmellick, was described by the arresting garda as “not the best motorcyclist I have ever come across”, after Christie crashed into a roundabout as he fled the scene.
The incident occurred at Bridge Street, Mountmellick, on July 17 last year. Garda Kieran Mahony gave evidence that Christie took off when he saw the garda, but he lost control of the bike and crashed into the roundabout.
Christie was very apologetic when the garda spoke to him, and admitted he had sped off as he had no insurance.
Besides the no insurance charge, Christie was also charged with having no licence and careless driving.
Defence barrister said that Christie experienced a “rush of blood” when he saw the gardaí.
“He’s not a great motorcyclist,” admitted defence.
The motorbike was on Buy and Sell and that day Christie had received a phone call from someone interested in buying it, so he took the vehicle out on the road to recharge the battery.
Defence said that Christie needs his licence for his job overseeing security staff and a disqualification would affect him greatly.
Judge Catherine Staines noted he had no previous convictions and had a driving licence and insurance coverage to drive a motor car.
“It appears to be a moment of madness,” said the judge.
For no insurance, Christie was fined €300. The other charges were taken into consideration.
