Shanahoe drainage problem persists
THERE are no funds available to repair a major drainage problem in Shanahoe village.
Councillors at the Borris-in-Ossory electoral area were informed by Senior Executive Engineer Michael Malone at their September meeting in Clough Community Hall, “Unfortunately this is not a case of just repair. We have requested funding but none is available. I’ve also checked regarding OPW flood relief funding but we do not qualify for this.”
Cathaoirleach Marty Phelan said ‘no money’ had been spent by the Council in Shanahoe ‘in a long time’ and he highlighted an instance where both sides of the village were flooded and mourners at a funeral couldn’t walk on footpaths.
Mr Malone pointed out they were in some way guilty them-selves by allowing building to take place on floodplains.
He added, “We have traced an old drainage pipe and I have requested Sanitary Services to highlight to the Department of Environment the need for a drainage system in Shanahoe starting with a main trunk storm sewer going from this location to either the Nore or a drain adjacent to the Nore.”
