Shop assistant cut by teen thief

A 16-YEAR-OLD youth who harmed a shop assistant with a knife during a robbery has been sentenced to ten months’ detention.

Portlaoise Disrtict Court heard that the shop assistant sustained a nick from a knife wielded by the youth, during a robbery which was committed in a Portlaoise store this year.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said that her client had suffered with a serious drug addiction and at one point the drugs in his system were so overwhelming that he could hardly stand up.

“When he later watched the CCTV footage (from the robbery) he was genuinely shocked that he would be involved in something like that,” she said.

The court heard that the youth, who is currently serving a sentence, has since entered into drug counselling and is continuing his education.

Describing it as a very serious offence, Judge Catherine Staines warned him that if he were any older he could be spending several years in custody. However, she took into account his age, his drug counselling and his attempt to complete education and sentenced him to ten months’ detention in Oberstown Boys Detention School. She said this would ensure he completed his Junior Cert while in custody.
