Skateboard Olympians

PORTLAOISE could one day have an Olympic gold medallist in skateboarding, if only Laois County
Council can find a ocation for a local skate park.

That was the claim made by Cllr Rotimi Adebari last week, when he asked the county council to provide an update on the relocation of a park for the town’s skateboarders to utilise. Town clerk, Susan Rooney replied that an attempt had been made to obtain land from the Presentation Sisters, but the nuns would not make any ground available.

“We’ve had this problem for the last four years, it’s high time we did something about this,” said Cllr Adebari. “In the Olympics BMX racing is now a sport and it’s only a matter of time before skateboarding is too. We could have a future Olympic medal winner..”

Cllr Caroline Dwane found the council’s response “very disingenuous”, She said it was “crazy” that the skateboarders have to put their equipment in storage.Mayor Catherine Fitzgerald suggested using the People’s Park on the Timahoe Road.
