Smaller waste trucks needed

LARGE refuse collection vehicles that are so big drivers can not turn in housing estates should be replaced with smaller lorries to increase public safety.

That was the recommendation by Cllr Jerry Lodge, who proposed that Portlaoise Town Council write directly to all private refuse collectors to request they utilise smaller vehicles.

“In narrower estates, children are playing and cars are parked on the footpaths and the refuse vehicles can’t see them,” he said. “We should ask companies to make safety their priority.”

Cllr Willie Aird urged caution, however, saying that the alternative some companies might give is for people to all bring their bins to a shared central area, something that could prove difficult.

“These vehicles are getting bigger, they can’t turn and have to reverse out,” he said.

Town clerk, Susan Rooney said that she would forward the council’s correspondence on the matter to Offaly County Council, who issue the refuse collection permits for Laois.
