Some drivers use speed monitors for ‘fun’
WHILE electronic speed control measures generally help to reduce speed, some drivers may actually speed up “for the fun” of it.
So said Portlaoise town engineer, Farhan Nasiem, at the recent town council meeting. A motion had been proposed by Cllr Rotimi Adebari, to replicate the speed measures that are currently on the Mountmellick Road on all approach roads to Portlaoise. Cllr Adebari described the electronic monitors as one of the more effective ways of reducing speed.
Cllr Willie Aird agreed that they were the most effective way at the moment, saying that any driver travelling in a 50 zone must immediately feel embarrassed when a speed of 60 - 70km/h flashes up.
Mr Nasiem told the meeting that one monitor costs €5,000.
“It would be money well spent,” remarked mayor, Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald, who said it was a natural human reaction to slow down.
“Some people use it for the fun, though,” replied Mr Nasiem, meaning that certain drivers seem to be trying to hit high speeds on the board.
Cllr Aird suggested that perhaps some of the money from the sponsorship of roundabouts could be used to pay for the installation of the monitors.
