Steal again and face jail

A MONASTEREVIN man who last week received his third conviction for theft after stealing almost €40 of groceries was fined at Portlaoise District Court and warned by Judge William Early that if he offends again he could go to prison.

Daniel Long, with an address at Apt 47 Bell Harbour, Monasterevin, committed the theft at Supervalu, Monasterevin, on May 11 last year.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that Long stole groceries worth €36.50 from the store.

Long has 13 previous convictions, including two for theft.

Defence, Mr Philip Meagher said that his client, a 28-year-old man on social welfare, had co-operated fully with the gardaí and all items were recovered. Mr Meagher said that Long was suffering with depression at the time and had been under the supervision of a psychiatrist.

“He shouldn’t drink with the medication,” admitted Mr Meagher, adding that Long was using drink as “an additional crutch”.

Mr Meagher said that Long has been off drink for a few months and he had shown immediate remorse when he was apprehended.

Noting that this was Long’s third conviction for theft, Judge Early warned him that if he commits any more he could face a custodial sentence.

Long was fined €200.
