Stole car one month after leaving prison
A CASTLETOWN man who stole a car a month after he was released from prison has been given a ten-month sentence at Portlaoise District Court.
Peter Fleming, originally from Castletown but with an address listed at The Shambles, Market Square, Tullamore, Co Offaly, faced four counts of dangerous driving in Limerick on January 26, and the theft of the car from Tullamore two days previously.
He initially appeared in Limerick District Court, but was brought to the court in Portlaoise as he was in breach of a suspended sentence he received on June 7 last year.
On that date, Judge Catherine Staines imposed two nine-month sentences for numerous thefts Fleming committed in Castletown in early 2012. He was also convicted of setting fire to a van. The sentences were consecutive, but the judge suspended the second sentence for two years on condition he attend probation.
At last week’s court, defence for Fleming, Mr Declan Breen admitted there was little mitigation he could offer on behalf of his client.
“He’s appeared before the court on numerous occasions and has serious drink and drug issues,” said Mr Breen.
Mr Breen explained that Fleming had been released from prison on December 15, but on New Year’s Eve he fell back into his old ways.
“We’ve come to a crossroads,” the solicitor said.
Judge Staines remarked that she had given Fleming a chance in June and she imposed a ten-month sentence on the theft charge, with the other matters taken into consideration.
Fleming is due back in Limerick District Court today (March 5).
