Stoves for houses

COUNCIL tenants in gas central heated homes should be allowed to install solid fuel stoves or ranges according to Portlaoise’s Mayor Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald.

Cllr Fitzgerald said it was easier judge the consumption of solid fuel. Cllr Willie Aird was unaware of any regulation where Council tenants cannot install a stove if they have a correct chimney. But he warned, “some gas central heated houses have imitation chimneys.”

Senior Executive Officer Michael Rainey pointed out that you can have gas fired and solid fuel however the Department does not fund dual heating systems. He said Laois County Council would not have the funding needed to reverse from gas central heating or to install solid fuel stoves.

Both Cllr Fitzgerald and Cllr Jerry Lodge requested that funding should be made available.
