Threw stones and steel bar
A PORTLAOISE man who threw stones and a steel bar at the victim of a burglary as the injured party was mending his garden fence appeared before last week’s court.
Darren Coss, with addresses at Knockmay and Hepburn Court, committed the offence at Knockmay, Portlaoise, on November 17. He was also charged with failing to appear in court on February 28. He has 18 previous convictions.
Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence.
Garda John Paul O’Brien was looking for property which had been stolen in a robbery on November 17, when he saw Coss walking through a field in Knockmay. Garda O’Brien saw Coss confronting the injured party of the robbery, who was in the process of mending his fence. Coss began shouting at the injured party, before he threw stones and a steel bar onto the man’s property.
Coss was arrested and processed at Portlaoise Garda Station. Later, as he was leaving the station Coss turned back and shouted: “F**k the guards... I’ll show you what I’ll do to this town.”
Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick admitted that Coss had an appalling record. She said that on the day in question, Coss learned allegations had been made that he had been involved in the burglary and he took umbrage.
“He’s caused Garda O’Brien more than his fair share of trouble,” she admitted.
Judge Catherine Staines said it was a terrible way to talk to the gardaí and asked Coss did he have anything to say to Garda O’Brien.
“Sorry,” Coss said.
“Do you accept that, Garda O’Brien?” asked Judge Staines.
“Well, I’ll have to,” shrugged the garda.
The matter was put back to March 14.
