Took lift in car stolen from farm

A PORTLAOISE man who took a lift in a stolen car was last week given a suspended sentence.

Philip Brown, Apt 3, Dublin Road, was charged with unauthorised carriage in a motor vehicle, at Morette, Emo, on September 24 last year.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that the car had been stolen from a farm and was eventually found by gardaí in Kildare. A fingerprint on the rear door identified Brown.

He has nine previous convictions.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client was a back seat passenger in the stolen car. She told Judge Staines that Brown has suffered with heroin difficulties, but he is now making “great progress” through residential treatment.

Brown was given a six-month sentence, suspended for two years.
