Traffic wardens need garda help at schools
Parking tickets could deter people from parking along the Borris Road in Portlaoise at school closing time but county hall has ruled out such measure because of limited resources and health and safety reasons.
at last week’s Portlaoise electoral area meeting, Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald, proposed that a traffic warden be assigned to police the Ashley Gardens and Borris Road area, following ongoing complaints from local residents of people blocking footpaths by parking their cars there while collecting children from school.
However, the councillor was informed in letter from Mr Pat Delaney of the Laois County Council’s roads department, that there are only two traffic wardens in the town and resources can not be diverted.
It was also said that there are safety concerns about traffic wardens patrolling the area without a garda presence.
Cllr Fitzgerald replied that, with the unanimous backing of her fellow councillors, she was asking for the situation to be looked at again as local residents were very frustrated.
“There are a few people parking and causing a nuisance for residents, a few spot checks and a few tickets would stop people parking in the estate,” she said.
She also pointed out that the town centre is not that busy with traffic around 3.30pm, the time the secondary schools on the Borris Road finish, meaning that a warden could be sent to the Borris Road for this period.
There have been ongoing parking problems at the Scoil Chriost Ri and St Mary’s CBS secondary schools since they opened more than two years ago.
