Tried to attack bouncers

A PORTLAOISE man who tried to attack the bouncers at a local nightclub was last week fined for being drunk and abusive, with Judge William Early warning him that any further public order convictions will land him a custodial sentence.

Stephen King, with an address at 35 Colliers Court, Portlaoise, committed the offence at Railway Street, Portlaoise, on August 10 last year.

Inspector Martin Harrington gave evidence that gardaí were called to an incident outside the nightclub, where King was being restrained by the bouncers. King was trying to attack the doormen and when the gardaí intervened, he became abusive toward the officers.

He has 13 previous convictions, seven of which are for public order offences.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said King was not proud of his actions. On the day, he had attended the funeral of a close friend and then gone drinking. Ms Fitzpatrick said that prior to this, King had curtailed his drinking and was on a probation bond, but this incident represented a serious slip. She said he has not consumed alcohol since and is now continuing to liaise with his probation officer.

Judge Early imposed a fine of €300 and warned King: “Were you to incur any other convictions on public order matters, you’re risking a custodial sentence.”
