Tried to sell stolen ring

A MAN who claimed he had found a stolen engagement ring in the street was given a suspended sentence at last week’s Portlaoise District Court.

Viktoras Alseika, 62 Laurel Drive, Esker Hills, Portlaoise, was charged with handling stolen property.

Garda Roy Cooper gave evidence that the ring was stolen during a robbery at Ashley Gardens, Portlaoise, on February 1. Garda Cooper said he received a phonecall from a Cash for Gold outlet informing him that a man had tried to sell the ring. CCTV footage at the store identified Alseika and a search of his house was carried out on March 29. Garda Cooper told the court that Alseika immediately handed over the ring to the gardaí, claiming that he had found it on Main Street and wasn’t sure where it came from.

Judge Catherine Staines remarked that she would treat Alseika with more leniency if he displayed more honesty.

“Credit this court with some intelligence,” she said.

Defence, Mr Declan Breen said that his client was insisting the circumstances were as he said.

Judge Staines imposed a six-month sentence, suspended for 12 months.
