Social media sites are helping Gardái in Laois to catch criminals.

“Twitter is marvellous,” said acting Chief Supt Byrnes at last week’s Joint Policing Committee meeting.

He was praising Community Alert schemes in the county who are helping Gardaí to catch criminals by tracking their movements through texting and social networks.

However it is a double edged sword for the Gardaí.

“If it is a sensitive issue, like somebody seriously injured on the street, we have a problem trying to get to it before it is out on Facebook. It is incredible how people lower their guard and put up stuff that can be read by millions,” acting Chief Supt Byrnes said.
